Simon never could help being confused by Inara. A companion - he's known of them, he used to move in circles of high society, first as an up and coming star of the medical field and then later in search of the connections that would prove vital for breaking River out of the Academy. But until her, he'd never run across one during down-time. As an acquaintance or associate of their clients, he'd always by extension been... well. Part of the job. Until he met Inara and joined her and the others aboard Serenity, he'd never noticed that he almost didn't even think of companions as people at all.
The realisation was not unwelcome, but it was a shock to the system purely in being a wake-up call he didn't know he needed. It didn't settle as it should have, either; it rattled and pressed like a stone in his shoe. Companions were human beings too. Of course they were, he'd never actively doubted it - but now he could see. And try as he might he still couldn't quite tell where her training ended and her personality began. Whether her smiles were polite or flirtatious, whether those stolen glances were really for him or if that was just his imagination.
And then she was gone. She was gone, and it ceased to matter. Simon was free again to focus on his sister, and on trying to find the balance between leading Kaylee on and hurting her feelings.
Selfishly, he finds himself thinking that it's really not fair of her to just stop being gone like this. ]
Inara...
[ His initial greeting is barely one at all. He's in a bar - very pointedly not the very Alliance-friendly one Mal has chosen this Unification Day (and to which Zoe and Jayne have followed him for their own separate reasons), but a dive bar of around the same caliber. They're all that's to be found on this side of this particular planet, apparently. Which is why he's so amazed that she would reappear here of all the places in the 'verse. ]

But now they're as a second home. Alright, maybe not quite a second home - he's been a part of Serenity's crew long enough (assuming the captain is in charitable enough of a mood to allow him that designation) that the ship, at least, is. These excursions feel more like a summer home. He knows that he'll probably never fit in here the way they do, but at least he doesn't feel nearly so much of a creeping need to get out anymore.
He laughs at something Kaylee said and wipes off berry-stained fingers on his pants. There's a drink in his other hand, but they've been talking more than they have been drinking - all the alcohol's managed to do so far is loosen him up a little. Well, the alcohol and Kaylee. ]
Oh, [ he interjects, eyebrows rising as he remembers something. ] I actually found something you might like. At the market.

Mr. Hoity-Toity-Prim-An'-Proper's leavin' the building!
[She takes a drink, and then promptly does a double take.] You what-? You found somethin'? For me? Oh, Simon! You shouldn't have!
